Our services are provided with utmost confidentiality, ensuring the safety and privacy of individuals and families fleeing domestic violence. We offer secure, undisclosed locations for our shelters, providing survivors of intimate partner violence with a safe place to start their healing journey.

ELIGIBILITY & INTAKE PROCESS
Our shelter services are available to survivors of intimate partner violence in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties. We intake directly from domestic violence advocates and victims in the community and through our crisis line.
If you are in immediate danger or need safe housing, our team will guide you through the intake process.

Your advocate will help assess immediate safety concerns and provide guidance on next steps.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is abuse or aggression that occurs in a romantic relationship. Intimate partner refers to both current and former spouses and dating partners. IPV can include any of the following types of behavior: physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, and psychological aggression.

Shelter Placement or Referral
Pending space availability, your advocate will place you in shelter or help coordinate with our community partners to execute on your safety plan.

How long can I stay in an emergency shelter?
Each survivor's circumstances is different, however emergency shelter stays typically last 30 days, depending on need and availability.

What do I do with my pet?
We partner with local animal shelters to arrange short-term fosters.
What should I bring with me?
If possible, bring important documents (ID, birth certificates, medical records), a few changes of clothes, and any essential medications. If you cannot carry these items, we will provide basic necessities.
What happens after I leave the shelter?
We work with survivors to develop a personalized plan, including options for transitional housing, employment assistance, and continued support services.
Can I bring my children?
Yes! Our shelter accommodates both individuals and families. MSH is able to provide shelter to Tri-county area clients and their minor children who are 17 years of age or younger.
