Volunteer Opportunities
My Sister's House has many volunteer opportunities, which include:
Telephone Counselor
Staff the agency's 24-hour crisis line. Volunteers use active listening techniques to counsel callers, interview potential clients and give appropriate referrals.
Victim's Advocate
Accompany clients to family court hearings and assist with legal paperwork.
Children's Aide
Plan and implement recreational and educational activities for the young people who come to the shelter with their mothers.
Outreach Volunteer
Facilitate support groups for domestic violence victims in various degrees of violent relationships. They may also staff the Outreach Offices in Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
Shelter Aide
Assist the House Manager in various activities, such as making minor repairs, sorting donations, and taking inventory.
In-Service Speaker
Share their areas of personal expertise with groups of clients. Resume writing, infant care and personal finances are just some of the topics volunteers have presented to clients in the past.
Speaker's Bureau Volunteer
Represent the agency at various functions and educate the public about the various problems faced by victims of domestic violence.
Hispanic Volunteer
Help counselors provide advocacy services and counseling to Hispanic domestic violence victims living in low-income housing and/or isolated communities. Please note: Volunteers must be fluent in Spanish.
